TLG Ambassadors: Meet Bruce

Welcome back to another edition of The Leaflet!

This week we will be sharing the story of our TLG Ambassador, Bruce Hooper. Whether it’s providing skilled volunteering such as professional services, advocating for TLG within their networks or supporting our fundraising efforts, our TLG Ambassadors support TLG in a number of ways depending on their background, skills and experience.

While working at Sandfire Resources, Bruce first heard of TLG’s work with the community in Meekatharra.

He felt the direct involvement of university students was having a significant impact on the communities, the kids, and the university students themselves who gained a deep insight into the challenges students in rural areas face.

Following his initial experiences with TLG, Bruce was passionate about helping the organisation expand the program into the most remote communities. Using his contacts, Bruce has been working to expand the funding reach for TLG to reach more students.

Having worked as a geologist in various fields for nearly forty years, Bruce has lived and worked in every continent (except Antarctica). He feels working as a geologist seemed like a vacation as much as a job, having loved every aspect of what geological exploration brings at all levels scientifically, technically and corporately.

Bruce especially loved being able to travel while trying to improve the lives of those living in the developing world. He is currently a Board Member of Redbank Copper and spends time consulting to several exploration and development mining companies.

Having worked in regional communities, Bruce is passionate about expanding TLG programs into the most underprivileged and isolated schools in the Pilbara and Kimberley, especially those with a high Indigenous population.

Helping TLG establish the first program into Wyndham and the Kimberley this year has been the highlight for Bruce during his time working with TLG thus far.

Bruce defines his success by being able to take small steps for a regional underprivileged child to improve their aspirations.

He believes that “we are the community, we all have an impact and making it the best we can is all our responsibility”.

He urges young people to do the best they can and grow with experiences!
