From Applications to Allocations: TLG’s Process to Send Tutors On Rural Program
With the 2026 Summer Rural Program quickly approaching, the TLG Staff and Student Executive Teams have been working hard to organise the upcoming programs. This includes incredible work from the various teams within TLG’s Student Executive Group, who have collaborated to ensure every aspect of the upcoming programs are prepared allowing the volunteers to do great work on their programs! But, have you ever wondered how our tutors are organised into their Rural Program locations?
The first important step is for new volunteers to apply to be a tutor with TLG! There are only a few requirements to be eligible to apply. Applicants must fulfil the following:
Have completed an education level equivalent to Year 12
Be 17 years or older
Have a sufficient proficiency in English
Have the ability to obtain a Working With Children Check
Be willing to commit and abide by the TLG’s Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
The Marketing and Community Engagement Student Executive Teams work hard to promote the organisation through various avenues such as social media and outreach events. This work helps increase applications, expands TLG’s reach and grows the amount of tutors able to contribute to TLG’s mission.
Here is a snapshot of the incredible work undertaken by the Recruitment Team after applications are submitted.
“When you apply to TLG your application is initially screened by the Recruitment Manager. You are then either chosen to interview or encouraged to reapply. In the interview process, you have a 1 on 1 discussion with a member of the Recruitment Team. In this interview, we love getting to know a bit more about you, your motivation to join TLG and getting a sense of your knowledge surrounding rural and remote challenges in accessing education. We thoroughly review each candidate's interviews, engaging in team discussion regarding candidates suitability for Rural Program and once we have finalised our decisions, candidates are either given the opportunity to register or are encouraged to apply again next semester after improving their application. Then, these applicants register and are sent to our logistics team to be allocated to a program that would suit their needs, personalities and preferences. “

Once the interview process is complete and the application is successful, new volunteers are able to register for RP! Registrations are also open to tutors who have volunteered with TLG in the last 2 years. Volunteers now have the option to either register as a tutor for RP, or apply to be a co - coordinator. For co - coordinator interviews, the Recruitment Team works closely with the Program Support team who play a massive role in supporting coordinators to organise and deliver amazing rural programs. This collaboration between teams usually involves a member from each team sitting in for the applicants coordinator interviews. Once it has been judged which of the applicants were the most suited to coordinate a TLG RP, the Program Support team works hard to allocate co - coordinators into fitting rural programs based on their prior knowledge of the applicants, their interviews and their experience with TLG.
Once registrations have been finalised, the Logistics Team runs the all important allocations meeting. This meeting is a 2 hour dedicated session run by the Logistics Manager, Stella, to sort and finalise registered volunteers into their Rural Program locations. The entire Logistics Team is in attendance, as well as Amisha as the Recruitment Manager, Yasi as the General Manager of Programs and members of the Systems Team to help navigate TLG’s databases.
The Logistics Officers then pair up, and using a spreadsheet of all volunteer registrations, they work to consider individual volunteers personal preferences, availability and capabilities. Amisha, the Recruitment Manager, is also consulted when allocating volunteers, as she considers based off of recruitment’s observations whether particular tutors will be more suited in particular locations and sizes of groups. These are used to allocate tutors onto their incredible Rural Programs.

Before this allocations meeting, Schools and Transport Officers on the Logistics Team communicate with both school principals and transport companies. This ensures that the schools which TLG will visit are confirmed and transportation is finalised before allocations. Amongst all of this, other Logistics Team Officers work to prepare for the Summer RP Program Launch for 2026 on October 10th.
Arranging TLG’s incredible volunteers from application all the way to allocations is essential for the organisation. It allows TLG to provide our Rural Programs to schools in regional, remote and rural areas, and therefore is vital in helping the organisation achieve our goal of bridging the education gap between these schools and those in metro areas. This process couldn’t be done without the hard work and dedication of TLG’s Staff and Student Executive Team. With allocations complete for the upcoming 2026 Summer RP, the groundwork has been set for another incredible program!
