The Role:
TLG is seeking an experienced finance professional to join us as a Volunteer Finance Director, providing CFO-level strategic financial leadership to support the CEO and Board.
This role is strategic and advisory in nature. It does not involve bookkeeping or day-to-day financial processing, which are handled internally or by a paid accountant. Instead, the role focuses on budgeting, financial strategy, sustainability, and board-level financial insight.
This is an ideal opportunity for a senior finance leader who wants to apply their expertise to a purpose-driven organisation with a modest, flexible time commitment.
Reporting & Key Relationships
Reports to: CEO
Works closely with:
○ Board Treasurer
○ Board Chair and Board Members
○ Paid external accountant (as required)
Main Responsibilities
Strategic Finance & Planning
Provide high-level financial strategy aligned to TLG’s mission and growth plans
Support multi-year financial planning, scenario modelling, and sustainability planning
Advise on cost structures, overhead allocation, and true-cost program modelling
Assess financial implications of new programs, partnerships, or expansion opportunities
Budgeting & Financial Oversight
Review and advise on annual budgets, forecasts, and re-forecasts
Monitor performance against budget and flag risks, trends, or material variances
Provide guidance on cash-flow management, reserves planning, and financial risk
Board & Governance Support
Support the preparation of clear, board-ready financial reports with the CEO and Treasurer
Present financial insights at bi-monthly Board meetings, translating numbers into strategy
Contribute an independent finance perspective to strengthen governance and decision-making
CEO & Leadership Advisory
Act as a trusted financial sounding board to the CEO
Support financial literacy and decision-making across leadership where helpful
Recommend improvements to financial controls or processes (advisory only)
What This Role Does Not Involve
Bookkeeping or transaction processing
Payroll, BAS, or statutory reporting
Day-to-day financial administration
About You
You are a senior finance professional with experience in roles such as CFO, Finance Director, Head of Finance, or senior finance advisor, and you bring:
Strong expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial strategy
Confidence working with Boards and presenting financial information clearly
Sound judgement, independence, and a collaborative approach
Experience in not-for-profit, education, or purpose-led organisations (desirable, not essential)
Capacity to contribute approximately 4–6 hours per month
